With the rise of the Manosphere in more recent years - White, Black or otherwise - there has been increasing discussion and conversation, much of it very contentious, about the state of men, boys and masculinity in our time today. The much-discussed “alpha male” has been batted around online and everyone seems to have come to a consensus about who and what he is: Tall, buff, commanding, domineering, coarse, snide - the jerk, the asshole, the fuckboy. Many online will say “Andrew Tate!” or “Donald Trump!” as a descriptor of this popular archetype. But a modest, quiet academic and researcher has presented to us some startling evidence that runs counter to the popular conception of who and what leaders among men look, sound and act like. His name is Frans de Waal, the (now deceased) Dutch primatologist who has devoted his life to understanding the psychology of our primate cousins, and his shocking discoveries into how chimpanzees jockey for power, accrue influence, reward friends, punish enemies, and lead communities - and how this maps over to human behavior and endeavor.
